余污 (Yu Wu) Remnants of Filth by Meatbun Doesn't Eat Meat, 肉包不吃肉

challenging dark emotional mysterious sad medium-paced

3.0

I would like to thank Yuwu for pulling me out of the worst reading slump of recent memory, but I’m surprised forcing myself to finish this did not put me in an even worse reading slump.

Finally… it’s over… this book is much too ambitious for what Meatbun excels in. I’m getting the impression that Erha is more ambitious than this is, so I wonder how Meatbun handled That. I’m not curious enough to see for myself, though.

This was a huge letdown. Everything outside of the seemingly doomed romance, angst, scandals, and family drama fell kind of flat, especially around the 70% mark. Just poor execution… believe me I wanted to enjoy the rest of Yuwu SO BAD that I white knuckled my way past the demon omega slick in the fuckhut and the garbage depiction of class relations because Yuwu has SUCH a wonderful cast. I can’t believe I’m saying this about a book that’s over 2k pages… but this should have been longer since Meatbun stuck to such an ambitious plot. Imo she should have stuck with the political intrigue, but wtv I know this is set in the same universe as Erha, where a lot more happens I think? Anyway, many, many more elements of this story could have been fleshed out, but they weren’t, so many of the reveals and character motivations and twists later in the story lacked the gravity and impact they deserved. Yuwu unfortunately turned into an incredibly frustrating read. :(((((( don’t even get me started on the anime-level plot holes and asspulls (there aren’t too many but they were unexpected).  Meatbun I was ROOTING FOR YOU!!!!!!! WE WERE ALL ROOTING FOR YOU!!!!!!!!! I know she can be such a good writer, which is why I’ll always be kind of upset about how this book turned out. It was so good until it wasn’t.

I actually have so many more thoughts about this book but I don’t care enough to post any of them.
