Storm
by Serena Akeroyd
Good lord, this story nearly broke me. Don’t get me wrong, it’s in a good way, but maaaaaaan. An emotional rollercoaster ride, may be an overused phrase in book reviews, but there’s really no other way to say it. It was raw. It was real. And it left me gutted and hungover, taking me days to process my thoughts to be able to write this review. The storyline was wonderful from beginning to end. It totally did not feel like almost 600 pages and swapped back and forth between flashback and things that were happening currently. This was a story about addiction, insecurities, loss, and ultimately, love and redemption. Serena obviously did a lot of research about addiction to do this story. The effort really shined through. The secondary effects to friends and family. The fallout to your ability to work and be a partner in a relationship.
The character development in Serena’s stories are unsurpassed. All her characters have stories, have families, and have pasts that define them. Storm and Keira are no different. Storm’s story was heartbreaking. His belief that he was too dirty and beyond redemption to deserve love, heartbreaking. Likewise, Keira was also a product of her upbringing. Not willing to take somethings, but too willing to stick her head in the sand and get when the going got rough. This story was a slow burn, second chance love story. There was no jump to forgiveness. It was work, lots of work by Storm and lots of work by Kiera. And while their daughter definitely held them together at their most frayed, it was their true, undying devotion getting them to the finish line.
A larger than life love story; a well deserved, epic beatdown that will have you screaming at your kindle; laugh out loud moments; intermittent crying jags; and a big, fat padlock … what more could you ask for? This book totally has it all. Perfection. Serena wrote the story we needed for both Storm and Keira and couldn’t have done it more perfectly!
