Misfit by Kelley Skovron

3.0

I really liked the synopsis of this book. It didn’t sound like the YA paranormal that has become very popular lately so I really wanted to give it a chance. Initially though, I was a bit skeptical of having a female protagonist being written by a man. I know that is really sexist, but it’s true; although I do have the same kind of skepticism for when female authors write male characters (at least lead characters). I like to be proven wrong though, and with Misfit I was.

There are so many things that I liked about this book. I loved that there was a whole new approach to heaven, hell, and demons. It was refreshing to read something that wasn’t the normal teen fare. I loved that there were characters that you loved, hated and frustrated you. I love when a book moves me to feel strong emotions. I also liked that parents and other family members were present during this novel. The father was a somewhat frustrating character for most of the novel, but you also get flashbacks to events that show why he reacts to situations in such a way. I really appreciated that.

The layout of the book was fantastic. There were short chapters and cool font for the titles of each chapter. It was a breeze to get through the book in just a couple sittings when you combine the engaging plot and characters with such short chapters.

I will definitely be reading more from this author.
