Nothing Like the Movies
by Lynn Painter
lighthearted
slow-paced
Did this book commit crimes against the genre? Yes. Was it still delightful? Somehow, also yes. It takes guts to have your FMC fake-date her best friend to avoid her cheating ex knowing that said ex will still be the HEA but I guess she pulled it off 🤷🏻‍♀️
I’m kind of busy right now. Did you need something…?
The phone buzzed almost immediately, and when I looked down, butterflies went wild in my stomach.
Wes: Oh, honey, you have no idea.
The swoon-factor was much higher on this one than the previous book—Wes’ yearning was unmatched. I couldn’t tell you why this was impossible to put down, 400+ pages of miscommunication should have been boring, right? I guess not.
The author did a decent job making the main conflict fairly believable (is there ever actually a believable explanation for “I broke up with you because I love you”?) and I was willing to suspend my disbelief for the sake of the cutie patootie baseball superstar buddy.
Being with you has changed the threads of my existence
I will say, the language in this one was waaaay worse than the first. Sure, sure, I might be a prude, but words actually mean something. A couple expletives here or there to drive a point home makes sense. But if you use any word—explicit or otherwise—MULTIPLE times per page for the ENTIRE book, I’m going to be annoyed. Just seemed silly to have it be so excessive.
