Tell me you romanced Garrus in Mass Effect without telling me you romanced Garrus in Mass Effect.
So first things first, this book was way too long and the climax of the big, adventure part was done with way too early (~40%). After then we were left with artificial lack of communication between the main characters, for the sake of prolonging the emotional foreplay.
Which is a shame because the start of this book was really strong, I thought!
I liked that the FMC was a smart, rational, straight to the point woman, even if that veered very much into a Mary Sue territory when she was so good at everything ever, basically on the first try. Everyone loved her, everyone admired her and wanted a piece of her ass. Violet Sorrengail is that you?
She was relatable in a lot of ways, in very obviously millennial ways. Except me at 35, if a man was trying to "stay away from me for my own good", I'd just.. let him stay away, preferably in therapy. I get the appeal of Atarian, but Lokurian was literally right there.
Setting wise, if you've been through the Star Trek to Mass Effect pipeline, you'll feel right at home. The MMC's race is basically turian. The child sidekick is basically a quarian (and is called Pom Pom, hello Honkai Star Rail). Vindilus is basically Wrex.
Fun fact, one of the races is called "hjarna". And let me flex my budding knowledge of the swedish language, hjärna means brain, and the aliens are described as "(...) their flat heads were actually a bone ridge that fanned out above the eyes like a ginko leaf, behind which a sizeable brain was protected." I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE OK.
I might check other books in this series, particularly if there's one for Lokurian, yes please.
