This was a really disappointing read that a strong ending couldn’t save. Nothing was explored in even close to enough depth—the insidiousness of the subtle racism especially. Despite being the narrator, we barely get to know Anna at all. Nobody felt like a fleshed out character, especially Bakary and Constant, the two characters one would hope to really get to know.

I’ve seen this book described as shocking and unexpected but I found it quite dull and predictable, but with a decent ending to tie it together.

I read later that the author primarily writes plays, which made sense to me as once as I read I thought I would like it better as a play, during one of the trial scenes that had very engaging dialogue.
