The Clouded Sky by Megan Crewe

2.0

I wanted to like this book more than I did the first one, I really did. And I tried. But it just didn't happen. Maybe because so little actually happened in this one. We get to know a lot more about life stuck on a space station and what the Kemya are like there (which by the way, they're mostly pretty awful people toward anything/one Earth). And the world building was done well, so it was easy to picture what was going on and what the planets and everywhere looked like.

Skylar's character still did not grow on me in this book though. I find her "eye for detail" over used and not actually all that impressive. She makes some seriously questionable decisions and is oblivious to certain things. The only thing I can give her props for is actually being able to pull off not getting caught there and dealing with it relatively well.

Skylar and our group of rebels make it back to their space station with no real problems. The only one that really pops up is that Skylar's intended place to stay becomes not an option and she ends up staying with Jule as his Earthling pet (though he in no way ever treats her as pets are). Which as it turns out, wasn't so bad at all. We get to see that Jule is in fact, not quite the jerk she came across in the first book and is actually quite sweet. So it's no wonder when Skylar finds herself falling for him. He's the only one we actually learn more about though.

Skylar tries to make herself useful to the group, but that's not always easy. But she does learn how to pilot ships and even goes out to try and gather information to find out who their traitor is. Upon returning, the group had almost been caught twice and it became clear someone was revealing their plans, so quite a bit of time is about trying to figure out who it could be. While it does put a kink in their plans and actions, it doesn't deter them much; kind of just slows things down. When we find out who the traitor was, I'll admit, I was pretty surprised. Never would have guessed them really. But I hated how Skylar dealt with them. I get that she was upset and all, but I just didn't like how she wouldn't listen to their reason. It wasn't like they were doing it with malicious intent. Made me think of her as such a hypocrite because of what she wanted to do for herself and family on Earth in the first book, but when someone else tries to do something for their family she feels so betrayed.

Anyway, it's right after that that we launch into what should be the final mission. The ending was probably the best part of this book because that's when things take a turn for the crazy.

Will I read the last book when it comes out? Hard to say. With an ending like that I would be lying if I said my curiosity wasn't peaked...but I just don't know if I care enough. I guess we'll see when the time comes.
