It takes a great storyline to keep me engaged long enough to finish a book of this size-this is that kind of writing and this is that kind of book. I found it helpful to have shorter books going to give me that happy feeling of completing books and then assigning myself "so many" pages/chapters per day of this one.
Read it if you're interested in Indian culture, history, or if you just like stories about families who are imperfect and a bit dysfunctional, but aren't we all?
