A solid start to this year’s reading spree. Nooteboom’s strength seems to lie in his setting the scene and ending the party - I enjoyed the buildup of the beginning, as well as the wrap up at the end, but overall what threw me off the most was that the prose was hard to follow at times. Perhaps this is due to the fact that this is the first Romanian translation of a book I’ve read in a very long time. I have a feeling reading it in English will be a different experience, and perhaps later in the year I will also bring myself to attempt rereading it in the original Dutch.
