The Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World by Melinda Gates

5.0

This book is phenomenal. In this book Melinda talks about the power of uplifting women and how by uplifting women we can change the world. Melinda shares stories from women all over the world and how they are being uplifted.

A lot of the stories discussed in this book are tragic, such as the stories of child brides, but the underlying message behind them is that of hope. The hope that is offered when we uplift women and consequently their communities and families.

This book was very insightful and thought provoking. I spent a lot of time reading this book pondering how I can lift up the women around me. Also there were many lines in this book that I found especially thought provoking, some of them are listed below. I found each of these lines to be like guiding lights to be more like the person I want to be. I do not have the type of reach that Melinda Gates has, but I can influence and uplift the women around me, and I want to use this book as a guide for how I help those around me. And I think the underlying message that sticks out the most to me is that love needs to come first.

Some of the lines that I found very impactful:
"...love is more urgent than doctrine."
"For women who spend all their hours doing unpaid work, the chores of the day kill the dreams of a lifetime."
"Nobody is any better than anybody else, and no one's happiness or human dignity matters more than anyone else's."
"You can't dedicate your life to the principle that all lives have equal value if you think you're better than others."
