Me gusta! No idea how I got my hands on this book as late as almost 30 years after its release.
There's no avoiding the all too familiar sci-fi tropes like a large, benign federation of human colonized planets, or an unknown and grisly galaxy-wide threat. But I found the religious aspect interesting and the plot solid. The pace of narration is fine, imho. A wide range of characters and places is included. You get scientists, tough military types, local and global politicians, spaceship captains, farmers, priests, sectarians and various sentient constructs.
Felt similar to the Hyperion cantos the Culture series at times, which is always good in a story.
