The shortness of this novel works in its favour. It plunges deep into the tangled inner worlds of its characters with such intensity that I found myself forgetting the original premise entirely. It’s not really about what you think it is, and it leans heavily toward character study over plot, which didn’t quite land for me this time.

That said, the translation is excellent, and there’s something undeniably intriguing about the story’s atmosphere and emotional texture. Maybe this is one of those books that hits harder when the timing is right.
