Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel García Márquez

3.0

Florentino Ariza is such a tragic character. His obsession with Fermina Daza, and ultimate rejection from her makes him literally heartsick. He spirals into an unhealthy pattern of relationships and liaisons (622 in a 50-year time period; he keeps a journal) I get his heartsickness- who hasn’t felt it? It was all the more frustrating that Fermina married someone who, at the time of their marriage, didn’t love her! In fact, it only comes across as comfort and affection; never truly love. I don’t really like the ending. I feel that Florentino deserved better. Fermina was flaky. I really feel that his life was wasted. This novel left me feeling sad. I didn’t really get into it until a quarter of the way through. Book Challenge 2022: a book published the year you were born.
