I remember watching the movie for when it first came out and hating it. Not because of the story, exactly, but because it felt like it mimicked so much of my own life at that point in time, and it hurt to watch. It felt suffocating to watch, so I tried forgetting it immediately after finishing watching it.

But here I am, reading this book for the first time, and realizing just how much I misunderstood it. Maybe it just didn't come across while watching, but my god, what an experience it is to read. To be inside Elio's head, to understand and feel his undying want; it reminded me so much of myself back in high school. It was incredible. Almost like being transported back in time. This is not a love story, that I for some reason remember it being, but it does have love in it, and it is so intense and so tragic it makes you want to burst. Whether good or bad, I still can't say, but the feeling remains the same.

God I loved this book. May I never forget Elio and Oliver.
