This Is How You Lose the Time War by Max Gladstone, Amal El-Mohtar
3.0
3,5 stars
First, I'd like to say I think this is truly a beautiful book, with amazing writing that almost feels magical. But I think this wasn't the right time for me to read it and that affected my enjoyment of this book.
My main problem with TIHYLTTW was the writing (and I know it's confusing because I just said I loved the writing but I will explain). English is not my first language and even though I've read a lot in English it was mostly YA, which has a far simpler writing that this book imo.
This is already a confusing book in itself in terms of story imo, but adding the fact that I didn't know a lot of the vocabulary, had to constantly search their meaning, and also had a hard time comprehending the sentences, this just turned my reading very slow and stopped me from immersing myself in the story.
Towards the end I got more used to the writing and actually started to care more about the characters and was finally able to immerse myself in the story (also I gotta say that the letters were just beautiful and they just got better and better) but still it was very hard to surpass the beginning.
In conclusion: I think me giving this book three stars has more to do with the fact that this wasn't the best time to read (but I had to star somewhere) and I will probably pick it up again in the future where I hope I will enjoy it more.
