Tarzan of the Apes
by Edgar Rice Burroughs
It had a great concept: what would happen if a baby were raised by apes? It started off very well and I was really enjoying the plot and style of writing, but then it became all about proving that white males are superior to all other species. Once Tarzan started growing up, there were all kinds of remarks about how capable and smart he was, simply because he was human, and he was able to teach himself things like basic math and reading. At that point, the whole book became about the author proving that white males are superior to everything else, and it pretty much ruined the rest of the story.
