Alaris by Fanny Vergne

3.0

Rating: 3.5/5 Penguins (rounded down)
Quick Reasons: fluffy, descriptive storytelling; interesting characters; LGBTQIA+ representation; I had a hard time connecting fully to the characters or the story; it's almost like a D&D Campaign, in book form

HUGE thanks to Fanny Vergne for the title! My review is voluntarily written and in no way altered or impacted by this gesture.

This read was definitely outside my normal choices, and not in a bad way! My husband plays D&D, you see, and I accepted this title with the hope that maybe I might glean more understanding of the game from reading. This was not entirely the case.... but I still had fun figuring that out!

The storytelling is fluffy and descriptive. There was a fair amount of info dumping that happened at the beginning of this read, but somehow not enough to fully "build" the world for me. Our twin MCs were kept so sheltered from the world, they were sort of learning as they went... which meant that's how WE were also building the world. While this worked in a sense, I also felt a bit discombobulated, and don't feel like there was enough world- building happening to keep the confusion at bay. The writing style was also VERY formal, which made connecting with the world and our characters more difficult for me personally.

Still, this was an entertaining and unique journey outside of my comfort zone. I definitely recommend this read to lovers of epic fantasies, D&D, and twins on opposite ends of a battle. The Alaris is waiting, Penguins!
