This is a reread and while I still really enjoy this book, I found a lot more issues with it this time around than I think I did the first time.
There is A LOT of internalised misogyny in our main character. If another woman even dares look at Tristan, or just exist, Kat looses her shit and think of them in derogatory terms. She often boils down female performers to their tits and dyed hair, as if dying your hair or having boob jobs means anything. While, at the same time, liking male performers and the films. Seems like misogyny to me.
This is particularly confusing and ludicrous given that one of her friends is a performer.
Kat makes a point to tell us, the readers, that she doesn't think porn is bad or that it's wrong to enjoy it. But she also has a lot of resentment over the industry. She doesn't think she can be with Tristan as long as he does porn. On its own this would be fine. But given that she often looks down on his job in her head it comes across as malicious and possessive.
The fact that she's so juvenile in her thoughts became grating as we started nearing the end. Porn is a job. Get over yourself.
Also, this one has high 'former twilight fanfic' energy. I didn't see that before but I do now. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but the often utilised personalities associated with former twilight fanfics are very present and it's one of the things that dates the book.
If you want to read a book like this without the misogyny I would recommend The Roommate by Rosie Danan. It does not have 'former twilight fanfic' energy.
