Prayers for the Stolen by Jennifer Clement

4.0

This story is heartbreaking. We follow a young Mexican girl who lives on a mountain with about 10 other women. Her father has abandoned his family and gone to the US. Girls are made "ugly" and boyish in hopes to keep them from being taken by drug/human traffickers. Her mother is a drunk and a thief. Every time I thought her life couldn't get any sadder something new happened. It's eye opening and thought provoking. The writing is unusual. It's very straight forward and sometimes brash.
