Second First Impressions by Sally Thorne
4.0
Okay, I did not expect this; but the surprise was wonderful and welcome. I loved The Hating Game and loathed 99 Percent Mine so was not holding my breath -- but this was such a delightful, sweet read.
Our heroine is 25 and from a conservative family, where her single sexual experience was turned into a shame that cut her off from her (already aloof) father. Compound that with another experience that seemed to confirm her lack of judgment, and Ruthie has folded herself -- and her life -- into something neat, controlled, and small. Our love interest Teddy is comes from a wealthy family that expects he can't do anything right, and he alternates between trying to prove them wrong and giving in.
Ruthie and Teddy are SO GOOD for each other.
I got serious [b:Love at First|58694256|Love at First|Kate Clayborn|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1630978031l/58694256._SX50_.jpg|84623334] vibes from this read: gentle, sweet romance with fairly low stakes. As with all my favorite reads, the obstacles facing the couple are the ones they've created and while they talk about what bothers them, they both have to overcome their own anxieties about who they are to be who they want.
The Harper Perennial paperback includes a letter to the reader from Thorne, reflecting on joy, hope, and the dream of creativity. As I've been wrestling with whether or not my creative aspirations are too late to be indulged, it was a much needed pep talk that brought me to tears.
