This just wasn’t for me!  So, so much politics.  Like, it’s ALL politics and very little action interspersed.  The magic system was fascinating in concept but I felt could have been explained better, perhaps even at all, but I digress.  This book also basically tells you absolutely everything and doesn’t show whatsoever, which is the peeviest of peeves of mine and it made it hard to feel engaged with the story or to connect with the characters on a deeper level.  I did like the characters though, especially Shae and Hilo, who I felt were really the main characters of the story.  The writing was good and flowed nicely, even though it was very detailed, which I do think is a feat in itself.  I won’t be continuing with the series though, but that’s because I just don’t think I’m a fan of the gang-politics-godfather-y-drama genre.
