I'm starting to see a pattern of how many books I fall in love with that are about portals to other, more magical worlds. It was almost cheesy with it, but the very symbolic names made it feel more like a classic you'd study in school and I adored it. The magic system having a serious cost makes it feel super grounded, the combination of our world and others feel more believable as well.
Graphic: Animal cruelty, Death, Gun violence, Self harm, Violence, Forced institutionalization, Blood, Murder, Injury/Injury detail
Moderate: Cursing, Racism, Pregnancy, Abandonment, Colonisation, Classism
