I feel like this was the wrong book for me to introduce myself to Tamora Pierce. I was bored to tears until the last 50 pages and had no attachments to any of the characters. The writing is fantastic but the characters felt hollow, the pacing is painfully slow, and the plot was near non-existent. I may try the Tortall series sometime but I think I'm okay setting aside Numair's Chronicles for now.
