A Duty To The Dead by Charles Todd

4.0

Just discovered this great historical mystery series! Bess is a nurse from England serving in WWI. When her ship the Britannica sinks, she is sent home to recover from injuries she sustained when the ship was bombed. Before the accident, she promised a dying soldier that she would deliver a message to his brother. The message was to be conveyed in person. Bess is hesitant, but she decides while on leave to deliver the cryptic message. As she meets the family, she begins to suspect all is not as it seems and the message takes on a different tone when she meets the third brother Peregrine who has been confined to a mental institution since the age of 14.

The mystery was compelling and the characters were well drawn and interesting. Once I got into the story, it was hard to put down. Excited to read the next book in the series.
