Piranesi by Susanna Clarke

Very lovely. Immersive in a patient, slow-building way that some won't enjoy and some will find magical. The things that many readers seem to dislike about this book, including the ending, are exactly what pleased me most.

SpoilerI loved the concept and imagery of a marble house full of tides and weather, and was fully prepared for it to all turn out to be a halucination or dying vision or some other kind of mental conjuring, because that's the *twist* consistently fed to us by Hollywood and fictions attempting to be interesting - but god, this was a real place, a world between worlds, and I can't describe my refreshment and relief at the fact it was allowed to be just that.
