pastathief 's review for:
Altered Carbon
by Richard K. Morgan
Really, that "you would recommend this book to" line pretty much doubles as a review. This was a decent book with some genuine thought given to the implications of the futurist ideas contained within the setting. From an idea perspective, it's a really interesting setup, and like all modern detective tales, it does a reasonable job of having that "all the pieces fit together at the last moment" feeling.
On the downside, I think that they went in for a bit too much gratuitous grittiness. I could have done with a little less torture, a little less unsexy sex and a little less of the general "life is cheap," vibe. That might just be me, but it did interfere with my enjoyment of the story.
The reading, by Todd McLaren was functional, with multiple voicings providing some character, although aside from the main character, most of the voicings were a little two-dimensional.
I still enjoyed the book overall. If you like the genres, you will probably like the book. However, I don't think that it quite merits recommendation beyond fans.
