Hostile Witness by Rebecca Forster
5.0

This book had me hooked from the moment 16 year old Hannah Seraton was introduced in chapter 1, in prison for the brutal murder of her step-grandfather, a Supreme Court Justice. Her mother talks an old friend, defense attorney Josie Bates, into defending Hannah. Josie is haunted by a past case but determined to prove Hannah's innocence.

Rebecca Forster weaves an intricate and mind-tripping mystery in Hostile Witness. She makes the reader believe the same thing Josie does- that somewhere, in all the mounting circumstantial evidence against Hannah, that the teenage girl is somehow as innocent as she seems. The court room drama reels you in and in many moments, leaves the reader breathless awaiting the next crazy twist. Josie struggles between wanting to believe in her client's innocence and by a previous case that drove her to a smaller law practise that deals with minuscule cases that never ever make headlines.

I can't even think of something I didn't like about Hostile Witness. It has everything I love in a good mystery: compelling suspect list, twists you don't see coming, court room drama, believable characters and well-thought out plot lines. Even better, it is told from a side of the law that crime shows on TV and in movies don't always tell: the side of the defense attorney, emotions that run through them, what a huge risk they take when they take on certain clients believing in that client's innocence. I can't wait to read more about Josie Bates.
