The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo

4.0

The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo was an intriguing, dark historical fantasy about Luzia, a Jewish girl in Spain during the time of the Spanish Inquisition. She is blessed with ability to perform small miracles such as fixing small tears in clothes, refreshing bread that is burned, and more. When she is noticed by her mistress, she is used for her miracles to better their social position. This leads to her involvement in a plot to resurrect Spain’s status in the world by bringing miracles to the King.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. The Spanish Inquisition is not something I know a lot about, so I was able to use some of what I read to learn more about it. I liked the idea of saints versus devils, and the ability to learn what you will stand up for and do. I know some were disappointed in this novel, but having not read as much by Bardugo, I was hooked for the majority of the book.

I would recommend this book if you enjoy historical fantasy, but there is some gore and torture involved in the latter half of the book.
