The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo

emotional hopeful tense medium-paced

5.0

"I only know that learning to believe in the power of my own words has been the most freeing experience of my life. It has brought me the most light. And isn’t that what a poem is? A lantern glowing in the dark."

I am new to the Elizabeth Acevedo party, and am I sorry I am so late, but also really glad I finally got here.

Xiomara Batista is incredible. I'm not sure I have ever read a novel-in-verse before, but I find that like an epistolary novel it is a mechanism that opens up a world of possibilities in terms of creating connection and emotionality when used correctly. I feel like I understand Xiomara as a human being in a way that is difficult to do in any other format.

The poetry in this book is rich, startling, emotional, painful, but oh so very beautiful.
