Wild and Wicked Things by Francesca May

3.75

This is a sort of magical sapphic Great Gatsby in some ways; on Crow Island in an alternate 1920s, illegal magic is practised in the shadows while faux magic draws the tourist crowds. Annie returns to the island for her late father’s estate and her old friend Bea. While she has little interest in magic, it seems her father was neck-deep in it. But a greater surprise comes with her glamorous neighbour Emmeline, the host of magical parties which somehow don’t get shut down. Between Annie and Em is a sudden bond that leads her into a world of dangerous deals, murder and romance.

There was a lot I enjoyed about this around the setting and the plot but I felt it suffered from some very slow pacing and Bea just being thoroughly unlikable I’m not sure why anyone gave her the time of day, let alone fawned over her. I might be cooler with that if the other characters were stronger. But if a Gatsby-esque setting is a strong plus for you, you may breeze past that issue.
