Finishing this felt like a chore. It took me two months and many sessions to finish. Franzen is a beautiful writer and the way he captures family dynamics is uniquely his. I usually don’t mind about unlikeable characters but I just didn’t care about them or their plot points. Some parts were straight up painful and I had a do partial skim (detailed pages of explanations of the drug trail). Also, a few unlikely sub plots and went no where - felt unnecessary and didn’t add to the story.
A bit of a disappointment for me because Franzen’s Crossroads is a 5/5 for me but this one just didn’t do it for me.
