This One Summer by Mariko Tamaki

4.0

This One Summer offers a stunning portrayal of girlhood with remarkable realism. While some critics argue that its subject matter feels too mature and express strong disapproval towards Rose, I find myself drawn to complex characters. Rose, despite her flaws, embodies the essence of a real teenage girl – brimming with curiosity, internalized rage, and grief. Her journey, though challenging to support at times, captivates with its authenticity and depth. Jillian Tamaki’s illustrations were breathtaking. I could delve deeper into a literary analysis discussing the characters, the extended metaphor of water, and the ending, but that would take considerable time. However, I strongly encourage those who didn't appreciate the graphic novel initially to give it a second chance. A close reading of the text may unveil nuances and layers previously overlooked.
