Bo and Win meet at a friend’s Halloween party. Both are dressed as pirates, one with a wooden leg and one with an hook for a hand, a nod to their respective limb differences. They have what is meant to be a one night stand. However, an accidental pregnancy results. I loved the mature way they handled this, the way Bo was determined to support Win but on her terms. I thought their limb differences - his due to cancer and hers since birth - were well integrated into the plot, showing how both characters worked with and around their disabilities rather than being limited by them. Win’s fears about how she would manage the baby care felt realistic. I also loved their friends, the way Win worked towards a career goal with Bo’s support, their banter, and the steam - mostly. A couple of times it did feel a little cringey. When I picked this up I was after something fun and light but with some substance and this book delivered.
