richtate 's review for:
The Beggar King
by Oliver Pötzsch, Lee Chadeayne
This review serves as a broad overview of the entire series.
In short should you read the series? Yes, in fact you should. There are many other more expensive titles that are surely far worse uses of your time.
These books are steeped in their historical roots which many people have pointed out. What I think is important to mention is that history (and truth to certain events) merely frames up a time period steeped in lore and paranoia level superstition. While some points of the story do at times feel repetitive the saga embraces an overall theme throughout.
At their core these are mysteries with an interesting cast of characters. As the story progresses people age and in some cases perish via all sorts of interesting ailments, tortures, executions and sickness. The author does a wonderful job at utilizing the knowledge of today to craft interesting solutions that seem innocuous in their time period but provide an enjoyable solution for the present day reader.
Did I find these books to be modern masterpieces of fiction? The answer to that is ultimately no however I did enjoy reading them and plan on sticking around for the upcoming adventures.
For the low price of $25 dollars you really can’t go wrong.
