As a daughter of immigrants who desperately needed to go to college and live her life, this book resonated deeply. This book gets that ugly and difficult part about the shame, the guilt, and the responsibility one can feel as the oldest daughter of an immigrant family.
Julia is that young daughter, whose older sister just passed away in an accident and is now left behind as the sole child in the household. Her parents don't really have the tools to deal with their own emotions, never mind Julia's. It's a truly heartbreaking situation, one that Julia navigates as best as she can and leads to dark places.
I liked that the book gave a hopeful ending, one where it is possible to find a way to communicate and connect, and in which there can be healing.
I'd recommend it to those who might identify with being a child of immigrants, specifically of Mexican descent.
