Two half-sisters are born under vastly different circumstances into different villages in Ghana in the 1800s. Effia & Esi only know vaguely of each other, they never meet. Effia marries an Englishman and largely, has a good life. Esi is sold into the slave trade and shipped to America, where her family line is raised in slavery. Both family lines have joys & deep heartache throughout the generations, one in Ghana & one in America.⁣

Y'all - this one is so highly rated but didn't fully do it for me. The generational aspect of this novel was unique & engaging in some ways, but at the same time it made it hard for me to connect with each character as we only knew them for a chapter each. I see how it's a work of art - and also I didn't connect to it. Maybe you will!
