Haikyu!!, Vol. 02 by Haruichi Furudate

5.0

Note that the insanely long time this took me to read has nothing to do with the quality of Haikyuu!! and everything to do with March being an awful month.

I love love love this story so, of course, I think this is a great continuation of volume one. The Aoba Johsai practice match is such a good hint at what’s to come going forward and it was really cool to see this in its original form. The art here also felt even funnier than last time, with a lot of subtle jokes scattered throughout.

My one and *only* complaint is how they translated certain phrases. I had this issue in the previous volume too (certain slang doesn’t read as smoothly in English, and I wish they kept the kanji on clothing, for example). It just stood out to me even more in this volume because of how they translate Seijoh/青城 as Blue Castle which just feels clunky—especially given that the name is meant to be a portmanteau of Aoba Johsai. It just doesn’t come across well in English and it would have made more sense to leave it! Not a huge deal, but I just had to mention it.

Now that March is over, I’m hoping to keep reading this series! I love all these characters and I really want to see all that happens after the current anime/movie.
