The first thing you need to know before reading this book it that, if the cover didn’t give it away, this is a dystopian monster romance. So before you read, please throw all known laws of physics and logic out the window.
That being said, Emma does a great job of building a tidal wave of tension between the the Humans (aka: the Achromos) and The People of the Water (aka: the Undine). In this world, humans have been forced to live in underwater enclosures because the weather conditions have made it hazardous to live above the surface. In true human fashion, the human habitation of the ocean is highly toxic for the surrounding ecosystem. The Undine consider themselves protectors of the ocean and therefore have been in a constant gorilla war with the humans to try and get them out of the sea (to use PC terms).
Our FMC Mira, is an engineer at the Beta settlement. She forms a bond with our MMC, Arges, after she saves his life. In a confusing turn of events, the matriarch of The People of the Water, Mitera, sends Arges to kidnap Mira in order to source information about the achromos from her so they have an advantage in the war.
This task is proven difficult because they can’t speak each-other’s language, but an old exploration robot, Byte, comes to the rescue to create translators. He just needs time to do so. While he works, the chemistry and tension between Mira and Arges ramps up. After a few impressive demonstrations of underwater breath holds and gymnastics, it is clear that mixing species is not an issue for them. It is an issue for their people though.
I enjoyed it & I hope you do too!
