One Piece, Vol. 49: Nightmare Luffy by Eiichiro Oda
4.5
Thriller Bark has a great set-up: What if the Straw Hats got trapped in a Scooby Doo episode! The art is fantastic, really taking full advantage of the premise. It's too bad the story just sort of puddles around for the first half, before dedicating farrrrrr too much time to fights in the back (and it's only four volumes! The man just didn't have much).
Alas, the ending lands so well it almost makes you forget how weak the rest of it is (and probably would've fooled me had I not bounced off Thriller Bark so hard I stopped reading for two years and didn't get back into One Piece until I literally went to Japan). Brook's backstory, singing Binks' Brew ... man... Oda is really good at getting me to care about these people.
