haunting and heavy. horrifically tragic. impeccably written. 

so many quotes to choose from but here are three that i won't be able to get out of my head for a long time. i won't be able to get any part of this book out of my head for a long time. 

"Together they performed their own phantom archaeology, digging through decades and restoring to human eyes the shards and artifacts of those days. Each man with his own pieces." 

and

“You can change the law but you can’t change people and how they treat each other.”

and

“If everyone looked the other way, then everybody was in on it. If he looked the other way, he was as implicated as the rest. That's how he saw it, how he'd always seen things.”
