This is a gut wrenching exploration of the catholic church in Ireland and the systematic abuse of young boys by clergy within the church.

We see this story unfold through following Odran, a priest who had a traumatic childhood and was guided into the priesthood by his mother. We see how the treatment of him as a priest changes as the accounts of abuse come to light.

This book skilfully explores the impact of child abuse within the church and how guilt is equitable for both active abuse and inaction relating to it.

Whilst the direction of the plot line is predictable this does not lessen the impact and should be read by anyone that enjoys emotionally complex stories routed in real life issues.
