Witnesses to Freedom: Young People Who Fought for Civil Rights by Belinda Rochelle

emotional informative inspiring

4.5

This is a really effective text to teach fifth graders about the Civil Rights Movement. It focuses on the children and teens who fought in the movement to help them connect to what they are reading. It also doesn’t shy away from the difficult truths, both then and now. It also incorporates photos of the children and events described. I even learned some things, even though I thought I was well-educated on the Civil Rights Movement!
