Devil in a Blue Dress by Walter Mosley, Kevin Ryan

3.0

This seems like a quick read because it's really well-written, but it is a heavy one. Mosley creates a believable historical world that is rife with violence and racism (because it actually was, obviously), but the parallels between that world and today's are undeniable:

"I would try to look innocent while I denied what they said. It's hard acting innocent when you are but the cops know you aren't. They figure that you did something because that's just the way cops think, and you telling them you're innocent just proves to them that you have something to hide."

Of course, this revelation was followed by a brutal (and unpunished) beating by the cops, and it's all too clear that so much has not changed for people of color in our country.
