The Saints of Swallow Hill by Donna Everhart

3.0

I really wanted to give this book more than three stars. It started out strong. Honestly, the first 2/3 of the book were pretty good. The pace was good, the narrative was good. It held my attention and kept me wanting to know what was going to happen next. But then, it just kind of fell off. Without giving any spoilers, there was a shift in the narrative from what it was, and that shift was just ok. The ending made me happy, but getting to the ending was just eh. I liked the historical fiction piece of it. I didn't know about turpentine farms or apparently how many uses there were for it. Also, the value of a dollar back then and during the depression was interesting. Overall I would still recommend it, but just with the caveat that it's not great, but it's decent.
