The Queer Musings of a One-Time Boy Skater by Joe Bainbridge
4.25
Mixing figure skating, early 2000s pop culture, and Drag Race with a lovely memoir that explores growing up queer and dealing with mental health, this quick read was highly enjoyable! I've only been a relatively casual figure skating fan (though I have gone to figure skating shows) and loved the references.
I really liked how Bainbridge talks about representation, self-expression, and the pressures of performing stereotypical masculinity within figure skating even as anyone outside the sport still views it as stereotypically feminine. I liked how the anecdotes were often followed by fun little lists. And I was highly amused by the "definitions" of the pop culture terminology used in the book.
I'm really happy that the author reached out, and I'm glad I purchased this. I may not have heard of it otherwise. I would recommend this if you're looking for more queer books and want a sweet and funny memoir.
25% of all proceeds is also being donated to Toepick Apparel to "support future boy skaters."
