The concept and world of The Rainfall Market was so imaginative! I couldn’t wait to read something more cozy while reading some darker fantasy stories. Issha really was the redemption for the story and a wonderful animal companion to tag along! A shapeshifting cat? I had to keep going.
Overall though, it read very young. For an adult magical realism book, this read way more middle grade than I had expected and the translation seemed a bit clunky to me? While I loved the community of characters within the marketplace, I found myself wanting more explanation on how orbs are obtained/kept and how the community of Dokkaebi came to be. Maybe it was meant to feel more like a childlike experience and one for the reader to feel more of a blunt and general gratitude in life. That’s ok if so, just wasn’t my purrrfect cup of tea. 🐈
