Star Child: A Biographical Constellation of Octavia Estelle Butler by Ibi Zoboi

5.0

This book took a while to grow on me, particularly because I read it in many more sittings than I should have, but it's fitting that I finish it today, June 22nd, on Octavia Butler's (and Ibi Zoboi's) birthday. Though at times I wanted to skim past the poetry, I loved the biographical prose, interspersed with quotes from Butler herself that lent themselves perfectly to the constellation this book presents. I love Butler's writings about herself, and I wished the whole book had been so much longer, to include more of them. The poetry was floaty and weighty at the same time, which is fitting for a book so much about the stars. I really did enjoy reading it, and I think this book's greatest feature is that it made me so excited to start reading Octavia Butler!
