The Little Mermaid by Metaphrog

3.0

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

There was nothing of a revisioning in this tale of the little mermaid. The duo responsible, Metaphrog, are not new to the comic game, and perhaps for this reason, I expected some spin or unique ... something.
This is not to say that it was bad to experience the Anderson version of the story largely untampered, but it wasn't quite what I expected.
I was originally drawn in by the lovely cover, and I expected lush and stylized illustrations to really carry the story for me. Sometimes this proved true, but at other points the illustrations actually pulled me away from the text. For one thing, sometimes our MC looks about 40 and a rough 40 at that. Many of the shapes and faces were repeated, but some of the important characterizations seemed inconsistent. The color was lovely, but the illustrations did not give me all that I had hoped for after the beautiful cover.
This review feels overly harsh - the comic provided exactly what it promised to - it was the graphic novel version of Andersen's Little Mermaid. It wasn't any more than that, but it did a fine job of being that.
