Originally published in Spanish La Estación de Las Mujeres (2019, Santiago, Chile), the 2021 English translation by Neil Davidson is released by Other Press. Carla Guelfenbein is a Chilean writer who won the 2015 Alfaguara Novel Prize for her book Contigo en la distancia. La Estación de Las Mujeres is her sixth novel. I think of all the women who wait unmoving in the shadows. Waiting is a way of disappearing, especially if what you are waiting for, with a mixture of masochism and perversion, is for your husband to appear with a girl clinging to his arm.
I'm in the process of re-reading this trying to tease out the interconnections between the women of each chapter. Fuller review to come.
Words are like winged insects that alight, weightless and unfixed, while facts creep along the ground, becoming soiled with earth and dust.
