Educated by Tara Westover

challenging dark tense slow-paced

3.0

Abused would have been the more responsible title. It’s my own fault for expecting something different from a memoir (and being unable to DNF) but I’m just confused who the target audience is. Surely not those most impacted by the subject matter? The unending depictions of graphic violence and abuse felt alienating after so many chapters and, in my opinion, started reading more as sensationalism for the privileged class. Obviously, I appreciate Tara Westover’s vulnerability and understand the connection she makes between the cycle of abuse and lack of education, but the marketing/buzz around this book does not align with the messaging and I’m not entirely positive much was ultimately accomplished beyond parading domestic violence victims around for show.
